Hyper Island is a fun, frustrating but above all educational journey, a journey that has taken Lorenzo Calvani from a safe job as an engineer in Milan to Hyper Island in Stockholm. Here he realized that he wants to work as a digital concept developer.

After finalizing his degree in Milan, Lorenzo Calvani started to work as a computer and webb engineer. On a trip back to his hometown Florence he visited one of his old professors, who told him that they were trying to start something like Hyper Island there.

“You know about Hyper Island, right? He asked me”, says Lorenzo. “I had never heard of it but it sounded interesting, and so I checked out the website. My first thought was that I’ll never get in, it is too hard, but I got really curious about it.

Lorenzo decided to visit Hyper Island in Stockholm and it was love at first site!

“I felt that this is something that I want to be a part of. Even though I got the impression that it was very design oriented, and I have no design background, I felt that I could really learn something here.“

After successfully applying to a seat at the Recruitment Tour days in Stockholm, Lorenzo was accepted to the Digital Media program and moved to Sweden.

“If it was a hard decision? Yes I think so”, says Lorenzo. “I was working in Milan and was already done with my ‘education’. So I had two options: Stay and be safe but bored, or try something new and take the chance to evolve.”

Needless to say, Lorenzo chose the latter.

“If I knew what I know now, I would still definitely apply. Being a Hyper Island student is fun, frustrating and sometimes you don’t really know what you are learning until you are finished but I really feel that I’m learning, and in fact I think I could be learning even more. I have a long list of stuff I’d like to get better at, but this is my first year so there is still plenty of time.

After Hyper Island I’d like to work as a Creative, or a Concept Developer, I mean, everybody has ideas, but how to use and implement them, that’s where I feel that I can contribute.  For me Hyper Island has opened up a possibility to make it happen, anywhere in the world.”

The Tomorrow Awards believes in supporting the next generation of creative professionals.
